EXPLANATORY NOTES

A.         AIMS

This quarterly presents up-to-date information on the planning and execution of new statistical projects and publications in Israel - including inter alia, censuses, sample surveys and empirical research in the social sciences. In accordance with the Statistics Ordinance 1972 as amended in 1978, the Central Bureau of Statistics collects and publishes information on the above noted statistical projects which are conducted (or commissioned or financed) by government ministries, public institutions, academic institutions, research institutes etc. The purpose is to bring to the attention of institutions and researchers, as well as to the general public in Israel and abroad, information on new statistical projects and on the appearance of publications, so as to avoid duplication in the conducting of statistical surveys, and to permit efficient and maximal use of available statistical data.

B.         COVERAGE

The Quarterly covers new projects as follows:

1.         Censuses, sample surveys and research based on empirical inquiries, which are of public interest.

2.         Publications containing statistical data and reviews of such research.

3.         Computerized files and databases which can yield statistics of public interest, or which can serve as a statistical frame for sample surveys and empirical research.

4.         Projects and publications in the fields of methodology, mapping, geography and classifications which could be of assistance in the preparation of statistics in Israel, or in their use.

C.         PUBLICATION SCHEDULE

The Quarterly appears every three months, the reporting period being the 3 months prior to the publication. Certain items belong to an earlier period, but information about them reached the Bureau only in the reporting period.

The editorial closing date of the present issue (No. 141) is 9 March 2006.

D.         CONTENTS AND PRESENTATION

1.         Current Research

With regard to ongoing research projects, the following data are shown in the Hebrew section:

Name of project, the organization commissioning or conducting the research, the purpose of the research, the subjects investigated, the main variables, the population/sample and method of research. Details are also given as to the anticipated time of publication, and the name, address, e-mail address and telephone and fax numbers of the researcher.

Details in the English section include the title of the research, the stage of the research and also the name, address, e-mail address and telephone and fax numbers of the researcher and the organization with which he or she is connected, to whom one may apply for additional information.

2.         Publications

The Hebrew section contains bibliographies and summaries of publications and reports containing statistical data, results of statistical research, classifications and other tools useful in statistics.

The English section contains only citations of the publications reported, but these can be linked to the Hebrew summary, as items have identical numbers in both the Hebrew and English sections.

3.         Classification

The material is classified according to the 17 chapter headings shown in the Table of Contents. At the end of each item in the Hebrew section, descriptors (key words) are given in parentheses.

4.         Indexes

Cumulative indexes by main subject (Hebrew and English) and by institution (Hebrew only) are included in each issue of the Quarterly. These indexes refer to the last four issues.

5.         Item Numbers

Numbering of items is consecutive for four Quarterly issues.
