EXPLANATORY NOTES, DEFINITIONS
AND SOURCES

1.EXPLANATORY NOTES

Tables: For most of the series the bulletin presents monthly data. For
some series (the chapters: National Accounts, Balance of Payments,
Labour Force Survey and Construction), monthly data are not available
and quarterly data are presented.
Seasonally adjusted data and trends: Seasonally adjusted series have
been calculated using special programs which estimate the influence of
seasonality and the effects of Jewish festivals and the trading days in Israel.
The seasonal factors were calculated using the X-11-ARIMA/88 Seasonal
Adjustment Method developed by Statistics Canada. The prior adjustment
factors were calculated using the special method developed by the Central
Bureau of Statistics for estimating the effects of the changing Jewish
festival dates and the trading days in Israel.
The seasonal factors and the prior adjustment factors - monthly or
quarterly - of the various series were published with explanations in
Seasonal and Prior Adjustment Factors for 1998, Trends for 1995-1998.
"Current Briefings in Statistics", No. 22, CBS, Jerusalem, 1998. It should
be noted that in most series these seasonal factors are calculated anew,
monthly or quarterly, using the most updated data. The trend is calculated
by a method based on moving averages of Henderson (for an improved
estimate of the trend - see explanations there, section 5.3 in Introduction).
Further details of the computation methods of the series to which
seasonality is adjusted, and of the trend, are presented in Analysis of Seasonality
and Trends in Statistical Series
, Technical Series, No. 39, CBS, Jerusalem, 1973.

2.DEFINITIONS AND SOURCES

More complete definitions of the series presented in this bulletin,
sources of data, method of compiling and processing, and limitations of
the data, can be found in the Statistical Abstract of Israel, No. 49,
1998, and also in the special and technical series publications (see list
of publications by subject in the bulletin and in the abstract). Short
descriptions of the principal series are presented below.
In most tables of this bulletin, economic branches are classified in
accordance with the Standard Industrial Classification of All Economic

tables data are still presented by economic branch according to the
