INTRODUCTION

This is the 120th issue of the Quarterly "New Statistical Projects and Publications in Israel", and it marks 30 years of appearance. The history of the Quarterly began in 1970 as a result of a decision made by the Ministerial Committee on Economic Affairs in October 1969. This decision, which was also reflected in the Statistical Ordinance 5732 – 1972 [new version], stipulates, inter alia, that the Central Bureau of Statistics shall collect and publish, on a regular basis, information on statistical projects conducted or financed by government ministries, national institutions, academic institutions etc.

From its initial appearance, the aim of the Quarterly has been to bring to the attention of institutions and researchers, as well as to the general public in Israel and abroad, information on new statistical projects and on the appearance of new publications in various fields regarding the society and economy of Israel, such as: demography, immigrant absorption, education, welfare, labour, industry, construction, agriculture etc. The purpose of the publication is to avoid duplication in the conducting of statistical surveys and research, and to permit efficient and maximal use of the available statistical data.

Over the years, the amount of information included in the Quarterly has increased dramatically. At present, each issue contains information on more than 200 new statistical projects and publications, adding up to more than 800 a year. Also, in recent years the Quarterly includes, in addition to coverage of research projects and new publications, also information on Internet sites and new computerized files which are of public interest.

In the 30 years of its appearance, the Quarterly has acquired a constantly growing community of loyal readers, who make great use of the information contained therein. At the same time, constant efforts continue on the part of the Bureau to expand the collection of data from different reporters and institutions.

My appreciation goes to those engaged in the collection of information and publications and in preparing the Quarterly – to the Editor in Chief, Mr. Michael Bar-Yaacov, and to the Assistant Editor, Mr. Avishai Cohen.
