The last agriculture census in Israel was conducted in 1981. An extensive survey was conducted in 1995. During this period, the agriculture industry underwent numerous changes that affected agricultural statistics in Israel such as the privatization of the agricultural sector, a change in the composition of the economic activities in farms, and a major decrease in the activity of farmers' organizations and associations (which were once the main providers of data on agricultural activities).

The quality of many of the current administrative sources is poor and they cover only part of the agricultural activities in the country. Because it is important for various stakeholders to obtain accurate and reliable agricultural data, the ICBS and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) have agreed to upgrade the agricultural statistics infrastructure in order to improve the quality of those statistics, starting with the establishment of a farm register.

The expected results of component C are:

  •  An overall program will be adopted for the establishment and maintenance of a farm register to be used as a framework for agricultural statistics.

  • A methodology will be developed for integrating different administrative sources in order to establish the new farm register
