On the Eve of Israel's 64th Independence Day[*]

* The population of Israel numbers 7.881 million. At the time of the establishment of the State, Israel's population numbered 806,000 residents.

* The Jewish population numbers approximately 5.931 million residents (75.3% of the total population); the Arab population numbers approximately 1.623 million residents (20.6%); and the population of "Others", who are immigrants and their offspring who are not registered as Jews in the Ministry of the Interior, numbers 327,000 (4.1%).

* Since Independence Day last year[**], approximately 161,000 babies were born, 39,000 persons died, and 19,000 immigrants arrived in Israel.[***] In contrast, about 8,000 persons were deducted from the population due to a negative migration balance (departures and returns of Israelis who stayed abroad continuously for over a year), and 4,500 persons were added to family unification[****].

* The total population of Israel has grown since Israel's 63rd Independence Day by 137,500 – an increase of 1.8%.

* In 2010, over 70% of the total Jewish population were Israeli-born Sabras  (over half  were second-generation Israeli residents) - compared with 35% Israeli-born residents in 1948.

* In 1948, there was only one city in Israel with more than 100,000 residents – Tel Aviv-Yafo. Today, there 14 cities with more than 100,000 residents, of which six have more than 200,000 residents: Jerusalem, Tel Aviv-Yafo, Haifa, Rishon LeZiyyon, Petah Tiqwa, and Ashdod.

[*] The data in this press release are provisional, and are based on the 2008 Census. The population estimate does not include the population of foreign residents, which numbered about 217,000 persons at the end of 2010.

[**]  Due to differences in the Hebrew calendar, the data relate to (approximately) 11.5 months which have elapsed since the previous Independence Day.

[***]  Incl. immigrating citizens.

[****] Family unification – persons who entered Israel under the Entry into Israel Law rather than under the Law of Return.
