This publication presents data on road accidents with casualties that occurred in 2020. The data on this topic are highly relevant for decision-makers, and make an important contribution to the effort to combat road accidents. The data are intended to complement and expand on the monthly summaries of road accidents with casualties, which are published regularly on the Central Bureau of Statistics website in the Monthly Bulletin of Statistics and in the Transport Statistics Quarterly as well as in the Table and Map Generators. The data in this publication are annual and countrywide, and are presented in various cross-sections, by accidents, casualties, vehicles and drivers involved in those accidents.
The publication includes six chapters that relate to the last year, as well as several tables that include multi-year and international comparisons. The tables presented are divided by a classification of accidents into two groups: "Expanded R.A." or "General With Slight Casualties" (see definitions in the continuation). The severity of the injury (and thereby the severity of the accident) was determined by a combination of data obtained from the police and the trauma registration system. The severity is determined according to the Maximum Abbreviated Injury Scale (MAIS), a medical index used to measure the severity of injury (see definitions in Section 3, "Terms, Definitions and Explanations" in the Introduction). The Introduction also includes data on casualties that were hospitalized as a result of road accidents but were not reported to the police (Section 2.3.2.1). It should be noted that Israel was the first country to publish current integrated police and hospital data on an annual basis. Chapter 6 deals with analysis of National Insurance Institute data. This chapter presents the cost of pensions and allowances paid by the National Insurance Institute to casualties of road accidents on the way to or from their place of work.
The Introduction includes data on casualties in road accidents involving electric vehicles that are not required to be licensed by law: electric bicycles, electric scooters and mobility scooters (Section 2.5).
In addition, this publication includes an analysis of data on road accidents with casualties during the Coronavirus period, with reference to lockdowns and in comparison with corresponding periods in previous years.
The present publication is one of two publications on road accidents with casualties for 2020. The second publication, Road Accidents With Casualties 2020, Road Accidents on Non-Urban Roads, presents combined data on the number of road accidents, the volume of traffic, and the probability of an accident occurring for each kilometer, and at each intersection on non-urban roads. We would like to thank the Israel Police for making the files on road accidents with casualties available to us. The data in this publication are based on processing conducted by the Central Bureau of Statistics using these files. Therefore, the publication (excluding Section 2.3.2.1 in Introduction) only includes data on accidents that were reported to the Israel Police.
